Vacancy: Electro/Mechanical Apprentices

Company: Bank of England

  • Fault find, maintain, improve and repair mechanical and/or electrical plant
  • Maintain continuity of work and information between colleagues
  • Keep drawings and Operations & Maintenance documentation up-to-date
  • Create a safe working environment by adhering to the Bank’s and statutory Health and Safety requirements and codes of practices
  • Undertake training to meet the Bank’s requirements


  • During your apprenticeship there will be an opportunity to work alongside trained personnel covering the majority of the plant listed above. How ‘hands on’ you get depends on your level of competency.


  • Your mentor and the team as a whole will make sure you have the support you need. Their job is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. They will also be there to help you through any difficult times.


  • Standard working day is 08:00 – 16:00, some overtime may be required. The successful candidate will spend two days each week at college and 3 days a week in the work place.

You will be working within a team covering a wide range of disciplines, electricians, mechanics, lift technicians, locksmiths and carpenters. Our workshops are based within Head Office and Debden. You will work within a small designated team and will report directly to the respective Building Manager. We have a diverse range of both electrical and mechanical plant on our site which we have to maintain, repair and sometimes replace. Our electrical systems include a large Low Voltage & High Voltage network, electrical substations, uninterrupted power supply systems, Building Management System, generators, alternators, computerised lighting system, passenger lifts, motors, batteries, portable appliance testing etc. Our mechanical system includes gas boilers, chillers, fan coil units, cooling towers, fans, fabrication work, commercial plumbing work, water treatment, damper controls, heat exchangers, humidifiers, pumps etc.

Minimum 5 GCSE’s at C grade or above, to include English, Mathematics

Previous or current enrolment on a course relating to engineering would be desirable.

Special Info: This job is part time to start, but can lead to full time based on performance. A driving license and own transport is an advantage but not essential. This job is based in Essex and the surrounding areas.

Vacancy: Building Services Engineering Apprentice

  • Learning and understanding the importance of Health and Safety within the workplace.
  • Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes whilst under the instruction of skilled engineers.
  • To be able to demonstrate these skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or withing the team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increase overall contribution to tasks.
  • To undertake and successfully complete internal and external courses throughout the training period, achieving the necessary grades and practical skills in order to entitle yearly progression to the awarding of Building Services Engineering Service and Maintenance Engineer (Note: Specifically attending college on agreed dates and attain the necessary passes).
  • To maintain a logbook over the duration of the apprenticeship, recording works that have been undertaken.
  • To maintain a smart appearance and to act in a professional manner at all times.
  • To understand and champion customer service within service delivery.
  • Meet required standards contained within PARIS sheme.
  • Meet with Mentor monthly and champion weekly, highlighting any relevant issues/concern so they can be addressed.
  • Liaising with Operations Co-ordinator and supervisor to manage work load
  • Communicating with Engineers, Supervisor, Operational Controllers and all other stakeholders.
  • Learn, understand and use the internal IT systems to complete tasks and test certificates to the required standard.


  • Changing lamps, ballasts and other control gear
  • Emergency light testing and repairs
  • Distribution board inspections
  • Testing of circuits
  • Electrical checks to motors, pumps and control panels


  • Weekly and monthly checks of motors and pumps
  • Belt and pulley replacements


  • Tap replacements
  • Valve replacements
  • Toilet syphon replacements


  • Filter cleans and replacements
  • Condenser cleans


  • General fabric duties ranging from door closer to toilet sear replacements.
  • Compliance tasks consisting of Fire Alarm tests, PAT tests, Fire Extinguisher service and Emergency Light testing.

  • GCSE; English and Maths (Grade C or above) or equivalent
